Artist Statement My work seeks to put images where there are few, to give a face to often faceless, and to paint a picture of those whose pictures, aspirations, dreams and fears are rarely mentioned in the anals of history. This was not my original wish. I just wanted to draw well. But from the age of about 6, I became a little aware that things were not 'all they could be', and that perception is everything, and that we could each play our part in shaping that perception. It started with wanting to draw different people as I saw them, as individuals, but not nessecarilly to represent a particular individual, but as part of a community group, yet distinct. I didn't like the crude images I saw of Black people, and wanted to add to the visual conversation. Of course since those early musings, I have become more aware of the breadth and depth of the work that others have created. Yet still, I have the urge to create Art, and to express, as the Artist must, and so this unbreakable bond continues.
