The founder of this online gallery is Abena Addo.
"I have been making art on and off for over 20 years, and have a teaching qualification in Art and Design. My reason for creating this online gallery, alongside my other project see link below, was to contribute something to the collective experience of black artists in this new technological age, and to share some of my work with people, as the life of an Artist, can be such that, we may often have to turn away from what we love, in order to 'make a living'. I think that it is important to not just 'go with the crowd', and I know from my experience as an Art Teacher, that many young people do love art, but due to the lack of an outlet...they do tend to drop it. I know it is expensive, but in reality working people of all communities do spend a lot of £ on mass produced stuff, whose profits mainly go to big multi-national corporations, so I think it is something of an education or re-educational issue. Develop a 'taste' for art!! This site will concentrate mainly on artists of the African Diaspora....I think what has happened to our community over the past twenty years in particular shows that there is a strong need for peope to really understand themselves...on a deeper psychological way...I think art does help to fulfil part of that crucial identity forming process. However, as I was reminded recently our leading lights like Kwame Nkrumah knew the importance of an 'Third World' and 'International perspective', so the site may involve itself in such activities. So get involved...spread the word and check out the 'general' site below. Kindest Regards, Abena |
